THOMAS SIMON MATTIA

Investigative researcher / data & forensics

About me

I am a forensic researcher and investigative data journalist based in London, UK, specialising in OSINT and GEOINT research. I collaborate with media organisations and NGOs in Italy and internationally, including Greenpeace, Re:Common, and Rai.

Since December 2025, I have been a Research Assistant at Forensic Architecture, where I support ongoing research on the genocide in Gaza contributing to evidence in the South Africa vs Israel case before the International Court of Justice.

Between October 2024 and October 2025, I was a Climate Fellow at the Arena for Journalism in Europe.

My investigations appeared on established media outlets such as Il Fatto Quotidiano, Die Tageszeitung, ANSA, Il Sole 24 Ore, Domani, Il Messaggero, L’Espresso, Stern, La7, Die Tagesspiegel, Il Manifesto, Il Mattino, Altreconomia, and Nigrizia, among others.

I hold an M.A. in Human Geography and Development Studies from the University of Padua and a B.A. in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Perugia.

Impact

My investigations on Italy's National Oil Company ENI's developments in Mozambique, produced for Re:Common, contributed to public and legal scrutiny of fossil fuel infrastructure financing. South African and South Korean activists filed a lawsuit against Korea’s two largest publicly-owned insurers KEXIM and K-SURE at the Supreme Court of Seoul seeking to prevent further investment in the Coral gas field development, with plaintiffs directly referencing my “Hidden Flames” investigation as evidence that the project’s financing may be unconstitutional.

My investigation on the Russian shadow fleet, conducted for Report (Rai 3) and Greenpeace, has also had significant institutional impact. Five Italian senators submitted a written parliamentary inquiry to the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Environment, and Transport explicitly referencing my work on Italy’s complicity in the shadow fleet. In addition, Sergio Costa, Vice-President of the Chamber of Deputies of Italy, announced another parliamentary inquiry into the issue. Following these revelations, the Catania District Anti-Mafia Directorate, led by Prosecutor Francesco Curcio, opened an investigation into the case.

My investigation supporting Greenpeace Italy’s “30x30” campaign helped campaigners critically assess claims made by the Italian Ministry of the Environment regarding the actual extent of Italy’s marine protected areas, contributing to a public petition calling for stronger protection of Italian waters. The findings were praised in the press by Ferdinando Boero, professor of zoology at the University of Naples and researcher at the National Research Council.
